Missouri Train Derailment Accidents
A train accident in Mendon, Missouri has left four people dead and 150 suffering from injuries, according to The Associated Press (AP). The accident took place on June 27, 2022. An Amtrak train on the Southwest Chief line that runs between Chicago and Los Angeles was holding approximately 243 passengers and crew members. A dump truck was on the tracks, which caused the train to derail upon impact. Seven passenger cars were flipped sideways due to the train derailment.
Two train passengers and the dump truck driver died at the scene, while another train passenger died after being brought to a Columbus hospital. 10 local hospitals have reported 150 passengers being treated for personal injuries caused by the Missouri train accident.
Risks of Uncontrolled Rail Intersections
According to KMBC News, a local farmer named Mike Spencer has urged county officials to make changes at the uncontrolled intersection where the Mendon train derailment took place. Uncontrolled intersections do not have any traffic lights or electronic controls, which makes them potentially more dangerous. Spencer believed that the crossing could be problematic, since the angle makes it difficult to see oncoming trains. He said:
The railroad sits at an angle. I was afraid this was going to happen to somebody that was not really familiar with the crossing and how to approach it.
